RapidWeaver and MobileMe Website Publishing

On 30th June 2012, Apple's MobileMe service will no longer exist. Whilst many of the MobileMe services will continue with iCloud, one feature that will not exist after June 30th is the ability to publish to webspace hosted on MobileMe. Apple will no longer display websites hosted on MobileMe after June 30th.

If you're publishing your RapidWeaver website to MobileMe, this guide will help you move your website to a new host (which you will need to sort in advance of June 30th 2012). We recommend LittleOak, however any host that supports "FTP" or "SFTP" uploading will work. Please note that RapidWeaver does not support the publishing of sites using "FTPS".

Pay for Webhosting

In order to host your website, you'll need to purchase some webhosting. That is, some webspace on which to display your public webspace. We recommend LittleOak who have a long history of hosting RapidWeaver users, however there are plenty of other web hosting providers. Once you've paid for some hosting, and possibly purchased a domain name (for example you might have http://www.myawesomewebsite.com) you'll need to start preparing your move.

Customers whose MobileMe Website Addresses Start with web.me.com, web.mac.com or homepage.mac.com

If your website's address starts web.me.com, web.mac.com or homepage.mac.com, you need to make one further change before you upload your site: click the "Setup" button on the main toolbar, and in the General tab change the "Web Address" for your site to reflect the new location. For example: http://web.me.com/mywebsite/ might become http://www.mywebsite.com - this entry depends on the domain you will have purchased in "Pay for Webhosting".

Customers whose MobileMe websites use a custom domain name.

This part is something that RapidWeaver does not, nor cannot, handle. You need to make sure you've moved your custom domain to point to another webhost. This may require you to contact the host or registrar who handled your payment and registration of the domain, and may take a few hours to work. In short, you'll need to undo the steps in this Apple FAQ.

If you have any problems moving your domain name, you should contact the original company who registered the domain on your behalf.

Change your Publishing Settings in RapidWeaver

In order to upload your site, you first need to change your publishing settings in RapidWeaver to no longer use MobileMe. To do this, go to the File menu -> Publishing Settings option.

In the Publishing Sheet, click on "FTP" and then enter the FTP details provided to you by your host. The details may differ from those you use to log into your webhosting account - and if you have any questions about what to enter in the FTP screen please contact your host, as the settings vary depending on your hosting provider. The Path field is especially important, and we recommend you verify this detail when preparing to publish your site.

We recommend that you also use the "Test Connection" option, which will attempt to connect to your FTP server and alert you if there are any issues with your server, username, or password.

With your publishing details sorted, you'll need to click "Save" in the Publishing sheet and return to the main RapidWeaver project window.

Re-Publish your Site

Now simply click on the File Menu -> Re-Publish All Files option, and RapidWeaver will export you site and upload the entire contents of your site to the new hosting provider. This only happens once - after a successful upload to your new hosting provider, RapidWeaver will upload only the necessary changes to your site using Smart Publishing.
