Google Reader Not Updating

As of this morning, Google Reader's no longer updating. (Slight correction: after restarting Socialite, it loaded two entries.) The Reader site says I have 632 unread entries.

Uncertain if this is a Google problem, a Socialite problem, or something in between, but if someone could look into that, it would be good.

Thanks.

    Hi Craig

Thanks for your message. We've not seen any other reports of this, and our test machines are syncing just fine. If you restart the application, does the issue still occur? And if you remove the Google Reader service and re-add it, does the issue remain?

    Thanks!

I added a second Google Reader service and that one is working fine. The other one continues to fail. That at least gets me working in the short term.

As noted originally, restarting the application made 2/600+ entries show up, but that's it.

    Hi Craig

Thanks for your message. As the Google Reader API is technically 'undocumented', it does have moments of flakiness. If you experience it with the second-added account please let me know.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Nik

My Google Reader and Facebook have also stopped updating. This had happened a couple time before, but it seemed that one of your updates had fixed it. Deleting the Reader service and re-installing it fixes it once, it shows unread items a few times, but then it stops. It tries to update (the spinning icon appears beside the Reader and Facebook services) but nothing comes of it.

This happens in two different locations (i.e. home & work, different networks). Twitter updates fine.

Console shows errors like this one:

    Hi Guys

Thanks for your message. Looking at the Console logs, it would appear that the connections to the servers are simply timing out [i.e. the APIs themselves are taking > 30 seconds to respond - a sign that the API is usually not working correctly]. The Facebook API has been known to be unreliable - and the Google Reader one has had issues in the past - so we're continuing to look into them.

    Thanks

Nik - That seems likely. Checking console messages it seems that Reader connections timed out throughout the day, when I was logged in to different networks, so it's most likely to be the Reader/Facebook that initiates the problem.

However -- that doesn't account for the fact that deleting the service and then installing it again instantly updates with new things. I re-installed Reader earlier this morning and it immediately showed me 50-odd new items, whereas before it had been showing the "Updating" icon on and off for an hour without anything new appearing.

And I just deleted and re-installed Facebook. It had been showing the "Updating" icon on and off for the past hour with no new items, but the instant I re-installed it, 58 new items appeared, that were actually updated as much as 20 hours ago.

I wonder if the initial problem might be a slow server response, but then Socialite has a hard time recovering somehow.

    Hi Ian

Thanks for the followup. We're looking into why the timeouts would effectively 'deadlock' an account: we've placed a number of safeguards in place since 1.0 to try and avoid this. I'll update here as soon as I know more.

    Thanks!

I've been having this same problem since updating to Version 1.0.4 (1087). Below are some of the steps I've taken to try to fix it.

    1) Delete Greader service. This works until I quit Socialite.

    2) Delete all Socialite preferences, and the Socialite folder from the Application Support folder. This seems to have fixed things, somewhat. Now, Greader updates and remembers my read posts. Twitter Updates and remembers my read posts. But, Facebook is now stuck in perpetual refresh.

Twitter seems to be the only service that is working properly now.

Is there anyway to downgrade to a previous version?

    Hi Fred

Facebook's pushed out some API changes recently that broke the refreshing for Photo Albums. We'll be pushing out an update later today to address this specific issue.

    Thanks!

    Hi Guys

A few hours ago we made a pre-release build of Socialite (which should fix these issues) available:

    http://www.realmacsoftware.com/forums/index.php/forums/viewthread/3...

You may need to remove and re-add your account, however if you're experiencing these issues please give the 1.0.6 pre-release a go and let me know how you get on.

    Kind Regards,

    Nik

Thanks for the update: if you run into any issues please let us know. We'll be pushing this build out as a final release in the next couple of days (so long as folks don't report any further issues with Google Reader sync!).
