browser compatibility

I just uploaded a revised website created in RapidWeaver. Everything works beautifully and when viewed with Safari the pages are identical to those that I created. However, with Firefox the correspondence of spacing between items in the main body and the sidebar is off. How do I make the outcome browser-neutral? Thanks.

    Hi Peter

Thanks for your message. What is the URL of your site, and which RapidWeaver theme are you using? The spacings between Safari and Firefox shouldn't be all that different, however if there's some erroneous code in the page that has been added, the error handling differences between the browser may be causing this issue!

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Nik

Thanks for the answer Nik. I am using the Styled Text page with the
Cameo theme. The URL is: http:///www.pdallosart.com. Thanks for the
    help. Best, Peter

    Hi Peter

Thanks for your message. Which version of Firefox are you checking with? It's looking pretty-much spot on in both browsers here with Firefox 3.6.8 / Safari 5.0.1.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Nik

Hi Nik, the Firefox problem persists and it is even worse with
Internet Explorer. All is well with Safari. I am trying a work
around by eliminating the sidebar and just pasting in images and
text. The big problem is how to make text flow around the pictures,
or even to have them side-by-side (as in Word, with formatting text
boxes). I have not been able to figure that out yet, but I am sure
that there is a solution. Any help will be much appreciated. Cheers!

    Hi Peter

Thanks for your message. Which pages specifically are causing issues? If you're looking to align the items on the page exactly you'll need to create an HTML table (by hand) that aligns everything as you'd like -as this is somewhat complex, and a more general HTML query - we can't help with the code itself. You may, however, want to look at using the Photo Album page instead and investigate other ways of laying out the page.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Nik

Nik, if you look at the second page with Safari, you see text (in the
sidebar) aligned with corresponding images (in the main body). If
you do the same with Firefox of Internet Explorer, you see the text
gradually shifting down so that the alignment is lost. Inasmuch as
most viewers look at the page via the latter two browsers, it seems
that RapidWeawer is not doing for me what I had hoped. This really
is a cross-browser compatibility problem, and I had hoped for some
real help. For example, if there is a way to put text and picture
side-by-side in the main body, the problem is solved. Further help
    is appreciated. Best, Peter

    Hi Peter

There is a slight discrepancy - however, the way that this is being created is actually causing the issue. Each browser has its own nuances for handling HTML, and the line breaks that you're entering (when pressing return) can have a subtley-different height. This is due to the fact you've heavily customised (in terms of the HTML code) the text that appears. Unfortunately, I can't offer a great deal of guidance to work around this - however, the Photo Album plugin may provide a workaround (albeit at the expense of a slightly different page layout).

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Nik

Well Nik, I tried the Photo Album a while ago in the hope that it may
work. It also lacks any flexibility in arranging images and text.
All in all, your program is absolutely wonderful in the ease of
publishing and updating. However, it is absolutely terrible in its
lack of elementary formatting capabilities. Couldn't you guys
somehow incorporate at least something akin to Word's Text Box
formatting so that people would be able to do things similar to what
I am attempting to accomplish? How about a command to justify text?
Etc. Things like that would sure add to the value. I guess that
I've hit a brick wall on composing my website with RapidWeawer.
    Best, Peter

    Hi Peter

The problem is that, publishing online isn't as entirely flexible as desktop publishing. The markup required to do DTP-like items is incredibly complex - however there is a plugin that can offer this (http://www.yourhead.com/blocks) in RapidWeaver. We're always looking at improving the RapidWeaver formatting, however this is something we're unlikely to fully address due to the complexities and bad-practices that DTP-like code uses.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Nik

Thanks Nik, the plug-in does the job
