LittleSnapper won't stop crashing on me.

Hello,

I really love the idea of LittleSnapper because it fits me perfectly for collecting and organizing inspiration that I find on the web. Only problem is that LittleSnapper has always been very unstable for me. I thought it was going to be sorted out via software updates, but since no updates has been coming for a while and nobody else seems to have any problems, I started to wonder.

LittleSnapper crashes on me for as little as dragging pictures to the dock icon, 90% of the time. Not only that, but also for importing pictures via the menu command, snapping webpages or even just browsing the library. Sometimes a sorting animation locks up and renders the program unusable until I force quit and restart it. Often when it crashes, I get data loss for the last imported pictures as well.

I tried to reinstall the application, trash .plists, try on different computers etc, but always the same instability. The only common factor between all the tests are that I use the same library. Maybe that is the culprit, I don't know. Is there some way to "purge" a damage library without losing any files or metadata?

I use LittleSnapper every day, and would be using it even more if it weren't for that I can't trust it. So I decided to write you guys. I own a license of all your major products, and admire your company very much.

Please help me.

John

    Hi John,

Thanks for the message. I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with LittleSnapper, I understand what an inconvenience this may be for you.

Could you try downloading and installing LittleSnapper 1.6 Beta 3 from the following link and let us know if you are still experiencing the same issues with it?

I installed the beta and while indeed it seems more stable, I still got two crashes while doing some testing like importing from the menu bar option or dragging from Safari to the dock icon, so we still got a problem.

Also, now I get an empty collection called "Import" together with every import I do from the menu bar option. See the attached screenshot.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the update. Do you have the 'Automatically Organise' checkbox ticked (see screenshot) when importing? This would explain the folder being created.

In regards to your issues with crashing - could you note at which points you are experiencing them and detail the exact steps for us to reproduce them? As we are currently unable to recreate this issue.

    Kind regards,

    Luke

    Hi,

Yes, I had the checkbox ticked. I want the folder to be created and the collection for the folder of images that I'm importing, just not the extra collection simply called "Import" that contains nothing. See detailed screenshot I attached.

What I do to make the application crash is really just common tasks like importing a folder of pictures, dragging images from Safari to the LittleSnapper dock icon. It doesn't make any sense.

Sometimes LittleSnapper crash when I'm importing a specific folder, but the next time the same specific folder works fine. The crashes just seem to occur randomly.

    Hi there

Thanks for the extra information. We've just pushed out a new beta today with a number of fixes for crashes such as these. If you could give it a go, and let me know how you get on, it'd be much appreciated. I'm keeping an eye out for any more crash reports from you!

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Nik

Okay, so after playing around with the latest beta 4 for a couple of hours, I haven't even had a single crash yet! Yahoo! I'm so happy that I can finally start to organize my whole collection seriously now that I can trust the application.

On the other hand, there is now another bug. After leaving LittleSnapper hidden and idle for a while, it starts taking up around 100% of the CPU while doing nothing. Intermittent but happens quite frequently and quickly after you let the application go idle.

Really happy to see this progress, though. Keep polishing, guys!

    Hi John

Thanks for the update: we're working on the memory footprint currently and will be shipping some further optimisations in the final 1.6 release.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

    Kind regards,
