Menu Capture
You were kind enough to answer some questions earlier this week and I hope I can ask one more:
Per your recommendation, I downloaded a trial version. I'm running Snow Leopard on a Mac Pro. I am trying to capture menu shots, starting with the menu bar and then the main menu, and finally, an extra menu.
If I try to snap just the menu bar, the snap is black.
If I want to capture a cascading menu, I must first click on a menu
to get it started, then type command+opt+5 (the menu goes away if I
try to click on the Global Menu Item). So, I click on say, Edit,
and then press command+option+5, command-click on the main menu to
select it, the first drop-down menu is still selected. But…if
I click on the dropped down menu, it simply activates the command
on which I clicked, and there's a little light box where the menu
used to be.
I hope this is clear: I can get started, but trying to take the shot either activates the menu command and performs the menu command.
Process:
click on (eg) Edit
command+option+5
command+click dropped down menu
command+click main menu bar (both now successfully
hightlighted)
nothing. if i click or command+click or shift+click or press command+shift+5 again, no picture taken. i just keep selecting different elements on the screen till I click the menu, but then instead of taking a snap, it performs the menu command, but the screen is still black with the clear window where the menu used to be. I'm stuck in that mode too until I find something to snap.
Sorry for lengthy description.
Keith

after writing all that above, i forgot to just ask outright: is littlesnapper ready for snow leopard, or might this be a remaining issue (since i can take a snap of windows)?

Hi Keith
Thanks for your message. LittleSnapper is indeed ready for Snow Leopard - right now, it's not able to capture the menus in the OS however. We're aware of this limitation, and will be looking to correct it in a future update.
Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Kind regards,
Nik

Nik,
Well, thank goodness it’s not me! I tried several times over the weekend to figure out what I was doing wrong! It’s good to know I’m not quite that stupid! LOL!
As I mentioned in an earlier email, my choices (as I see them) are between LS and Voila, and LS has the edge. It turns out that while V can do more than LS (I hope you do add circle, polygon, and freeform screen captures), still, LS has the edge for me. It just seems more polished. Also, V cannot capture menu bars or drop shadows, which LS can (kind of a deal breaker).
What V lacks, it lacks as a program and their developers are looking into it—and who knows if they’ll add it or when. The LS menu problem is simply a current feature disabled by Snow Leopard (if I understand correctly the problem). I assume your intent is to keep that feature.
I hesitate to ask, but honestly, I’m not looking for contracts engraved in marble: Can you give me a rough estimate of when you think you’ll fix the problem? Again, not looking for a solid date, just a “guestimate.” Is it low on the priority list? High? Do you think you’ll have it within the next few weeks? Months? Really and truly no idea? I’m just trying to get a bead on a date to check back, or, if it really were “soon-ish," I’d consider buying it now and just waiting.
Sorry this got so long; I’m just excited and hopeful for good news!
Best regards,
Keith

Hi Keith
We don't offer guesses for fixes / features / changes to our apps, as they can change during development. Right now, I don't rightly know when this change will appear. It's nothing to do with Snow Leopard (as it happens) it's just a limitation of our custom snapping engine in 1.5.x that we introduced to allow us to capture window names (and do some more things in future versions).
Sorry I can't be of more help with a date for this fix, but please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Kind regards,
Nik

Hey, Nik,

I understand completely. I work for IBM and I completely understand application development cycles and the surprises they can bring. Since it’s an internal engine and not just some odd new SL API, I think I’ll hold off on my purchase (unless you can just hint? LOL!).
If you maintain a list of people to email re certain issues, please consider adding this email address. I would love to learn when the problem has been fixed! Otherwise, I can check in periodically.
Thank you for all your help!
Best wishes,
Keith

Hi Keith
We don't maintain email lists for individual feature releases, as we're a small company (7 of us) and lists can get complex to manage as time goes on!
I wish I could hint, however right now I really don't know. It's definitely filed, in our tracker however!
Kind Regards,
Nik
